FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Large teams come into play for this field of work. The size of a production crew can be more than 200 people on certain types of productions, and on days with a lot of background action the total number of people at work on set can balloon to more than 1000. The management of this requires successful collaboration and impeccable communication.

This position often involves 12-hour workdays, and there are often last-minute changes to the production schedule that requires staff to adapt quickly. Productions can sometimes be shot overnight (for night scenes) or begin very early in the morning. Be prepared for a curveball to be thrown your way, while making the magic happen.

The career path of a PA can go in many different directions. It is a launching point that can set you toward many different career goals in the entertainment industry. Technically, the On-Set PA operates in the Production Department under the Assistant Director (AD), but the position offers exposure to many different departments at work on a production, allowing for opportunities to move laterally.

An On-Set PA is on a pathway toward becoming an AD or 2nd AD and will earn “days” toward joining the Director Guild of America (DGA). If a PA is laterally brought over to another department that may be covered by a different union such as IATSE Local 479, that individual will be required to follow the rules associated with that union before seeking appropriate references, and then then applying for that union’s membership.

Reliable transportation to and from set at all times of day and night is required as productions often begin and end work at odd times. While a personal vehicle is ideal, it is not required. Access to your personal vehicle on-site will make the occasional quickly needed city run easier for you.
