Every health coaching program maintains a unique style, and ECE encourages you to research the best possible fit. You may want to consider the following questions:

  • Has the International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching (ICHWC)* approved the program?
  • Will you learn coaching skills via live instruction and practice -- or simply textbooks?
  • Does the program feature a client-centered approach?
  • Who will mentor you throughout the program: paid professionals or volunteers?
  • Will the curriculum cover motivational interviewing, positive psychology, action planning, and SMART goals?

*The ICHWC collaborated with the National Board of Medical Examiners to create the first national credentialing exam specifically for health coaches. To meet the eligibility requirements for the exam, students must successfully complete an ICHWC-approved transition program. Passing the exam earns the title of National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC).
