Basic Computer Use and IT Fundamentals

Emory Continuing Education offers technology training on many different topics, but we do not have training for new computer users. We understand how important these skills are, though, and want to provide our potential students with the resources they need to succeed. Below are resources, grouped by provider or county, that can help you learn basic computer skills.

Resources

The following collection of resources is provided for those who want to learn basic computer skills. If a resource is only available online, that is noted beside the link.

Goodwill

Both Goodwill of North Georgia and the Goodwill Community Foundation offer resources to help people develop technology skills. Learn how to use a computer or build on existing skills to pursue a new career.

Fulton County / City of Atlanta

The following resources are available to residents of Fulton County and the City of Atlanta. Most resources are available through the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System and will require that you have a library card.

Cobb County

The following resources are available to residents of Cobb County. All resources are available through the Cobb County Public Library System and will require that you have a library card.

DeKalb County

The following resources are available to residents of DeKalb County. All resources are available through the DeKalb County Public Library and will require that you have a library card.

Other Resources

Both the United States and Georgia Departments of Labor have resources for those looking to learn new skills, including basic computer skills. Grow with Google aims to help everyone across America access the best of Google's training and tools to grow their skills, careers, and businesses.

Basic Recommended Skills

In order to provide the best classroom experience, Emory Continuing Education asks that students who are considering enrolling in IT courses be comfortable using or familiar with the following:

  • Basic hardware terminology (display, hard drive, Wi-Fi, etc.)
  • Common keyboard commands (copy/paste and similar)
  • Connecting to the internet via a wired or wireless connection
  • Logging into your email from a new device 
  • Sending and receiving email
  • Saving, retrieving, and deleting files
  • Downloading, copying, and renaming files
  • Searching for files on a computer
  • Attaching files to an email or uploading to a website
  • Conducting an effective search with a search engine
  • Navigating between folders
  • Installing and uninstalling software

More advanced courses will usually note their prerequisites. If you aren't sure your skills are advanced enough for a particular course, please reach out before you register.
