Lesson 1: Summary of Landscape Material Cost
  • Activity – Constructing a landscape proposal using provided landscape plan and material price sheet.
  • Determining material quantities using square footage (gravel, stone, groundcovers, soil, amendments, mulches and turf).
  • Performing a take-off from a landscape plan.
  • Overview of plant, hardscape, mulch and amendment material cost.

Lesson 2: Calculating and Forecasting Labor Cost
  • Accurately predicting landscape installation labor times using industry standards.
  • Allocating time for preparation and project completion: (travel, clean-up, material pick-up, mobilization).

Lesson 3: Developing Landscape Proposals for Profit
  • Capturing labor burden (payroll taxes and benefits).
  • Reviewing direct and indirect cost
  • Markup vs. Margin: Determining your break-even overhead margin.
  • Pricing landscape enhancements and adding margin for profit.
  • Activity: Constructing a second landscape proposal from provided landscape plan using the information from class – compare the difference(s) from earlier proposal.
