Adobe Illustrator Level 1: Introduction

Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard tool for creating logos, maps, diagrams, vector illustrations, and more. In this class, you’ll learn to understand the appropriate uses for Illustrator, the difference between vector and raster graphics, and how to create complex graphics with simple components and tools.

Adobe InDesign takes desktop publishing and design to a new level, combining extraordinary production power and creative freedom with tight integration with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat software. Create simple documents and prepare them for print or export as a PDF. Topics include learning the work area, working with text and graphics, creating text and object styles, and the basics of design.

Adobe Photoshop Level 1: Introduction

Photoshop is the industry standard for working with digital images—learn to create your own graphics! We'll cover image formats, color correction, retouching digital photos, layers, advanced selection techniques, and other editing tools.

During this class you will learn to create and edit your own digital graphics and photographs. This hands-on course discusses image formats, color correction, retouching digital photos, working with layers, advanced selection techniques, and using various editing tools. You will also learn how several quick fix techniques and how to prepare for both print and web output.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Foundations of Graphic Design

Explore the graphic designer's role as well as techniques for creative thinking and problem solving as we study and discover effective visual communication strategies. Digital media vs. traditional print design discussions will support development.


In the world of graphic design, good looks are everything….and so many websites, posters, greeting cards and more need your help ASAP. Fortunately, creating professional content – whether for your job, church, family, or yourself – is made easier by understanding the fundamental concepts of graphic design.

This course identifies multiple visual communications principles and elements within good design, including: color theory, composition, typography and more. We’ll also demonstrate how these artistic decisions can create cohesive, expressive branding through the use of templates and style guides.

Come explore the graphic designer’s role - as well as techniques for creative thinking and problem solving – as we study and discover effective visual communication strategies. Class discussions regarding variances between new digital media and traditional print design will also help budding designers eliminate anxieties about the unknown.

Through a series of lectures and project-based homework assignments, this course will demystify the graphic design profession for students who are:
  • new to working in design roles;
  • considering switching to a design career;
  • self-taught and struggle to find fundamental solutions; or
  • seasoned designers needing a refresher and introduction to emerging tools, techniques, and technologies.

ECE recommends completing this course as the first in the Fundamentals of Graphic Design Certificate, but it can be taken at any time during the program. Students will complete three assignments related to visual communication principles, creative briefs, and brand design. Experience with Adobe software is welcomed but not required for success.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the role of color, composition, and typography in visual communication
  • Explain the various roles and duties of a graphic design professional
  • Develop a roadmap to guide design projects from conception to completion
  • Choose the right hardware, software, and file types for each project

Adobe Illustrator Level 2: Intermediate

Use Illustrator to create dynamic graphics with advanced drawing and editing tools, path-editing techniques, filter effects, and masks. By the end of this course, you'll have developed an understanding of Illustrator's more advanced features and tools. Tuition: $695.
