The program curriculum provides core courses for strong foundational knowledge and electives allowing you to experience several different genres. Courses are offered with required courses scheduled in a cohort format and electives scheduled throughout the year for your convenience. Prior to acceptance in the program, students will be required to pay an application fee and submit a writing sample  for review. Upon successful completion of all coursework, students will complete a final writing project to receive their certificate. Credit for previous coursework may apply.
Aspiring writers who are ready to make a concerted, focused effort to refining their vision, finding their own voice as a writer, and improving or completing their work are ideal candidates for the certificate program.

  • Emory Continuing Education provides a rigorous course curriculum which allows you to work towards improving and refining your writing skills

  • Designed for aspiring writers, our Creative Writing Certificate provides individualized guidance from experienced instructors who are published in a variety of genres. Instructors and guest speakers are active professionals who are recognized for their achievements.

Students enrolled in the cohort certificate program enjoy the following benefits:

    • This certificate program is designed to provide knowledge and experience in the student's chosen area of concentration--fiction or nonfiction.

    • Through a sequence of beginning and advanced courses, as well as a capstone final project, this certificate enables students to acquire skills, develop a portfolio, and refine goals necessary to the pursuit of writing for professional or personal purpose.

    • Online weekly office hours will be hosted by the instructors to provide answers to student questions regarding their assignments and progress with their writing

    • This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete six courses in their area of concentration, as follows: Creative Fiction or Creative Nonfiction Writing, 20 hours of electives and the capstone project course

    • Cohort programs allow students to sequentially move through the courses developing and executing the skills to move forward to the next level of writing.  Each course is designed to build on the skills learned in the previous course which is vital to successfully completing a body of work in the capstone project.

    • Cohort program allows students to join the online writers group creating a group of peers and instructors to critique and give feedback on assignments and writing samples as the student progresses through the program.

    • Feedback given by instructors is given in the form of a narrative evaluation after each class is completed to give personalized attention to your writing. Instructors will provide an analysis of the student writer’s strengths as well as providing guidance on areas needing further development in the narrative.

    • Cohort programs provide the security of classes not cancelling or prevention of student entry due to maxing out.  You will travel together with your fellow students through the sequence of classes and forming a bond with the other writing students in the two program genres.
