If You Aspire to Move up in the Organization, You Must be Able to Speak on Your Feet
For years, public polls indicate that most people put the fear of public speaking ahead of dying! Clearly there is a lot of perceived stress that accompanies speaking in front of others. And yet, this is nothing more than an acquired skill. Once you learn the basics of giving a presentation, you can successfully deliver facts and figures or persuade an audience to take a particular course of action. Here is a six-step model to use that is easy to apply to a variety of speaking situations.
- Step 1. Purpose - what is your objective in presenting your material?
- Step 2. Audience - who are you presenting to and do you understand their needs and expectations?
- Step 3. Message - can you create a message that achieves the purpose and meets the audience’s needs and expectations? Choose the format that best fits the circumstances and purpose (i.e. a presentation to inform or persuade).
- Step 4. Delivery - you are the vehicle through which the audience receives your message and understands it. Think of your task as telling a story. If it’s a persuasive presentation you must deliver it with enthusiasm and personal conviction.
- Step 5. Feedback - actively seek feedback from others both during the presentation and afterwards.
- Step 6. Follow-up - your obligation for becoming a better communicator doesn’t necessarily end when you finish your presentation and sit down. For example, what information do you need to provide to your listeners that they were expecting you to cover?
It is almost a guarantee that when you thoroughly prepare by understanding your purpose, the audience needs and have crafted a suitable message, that you will exhibit more genuine confidence to your audience and they will enjoy the time spent hearing your ideas.
