Lean Six Sigma for Healthcare Professionals

Optimize your healthcare environment with our essential Lean Six Sigma (LSS) training. Through both classroom activities and scenario-based assessments, course participants will learn how to lead or contribute to successful healthcare improvement projects ranging from patient-delivery to finance and support operations. Participants can then apply practical knowledge and skills learned to their own real-world healthcare settings. This post-White Belt/Green Belt LSS course will also develop participants’ understanding of and experience in the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) methodology as well as key LSS tool utilization.

Prior to enrollment in Lean Six Sigma for Healthcare Professionals, completion of the Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certificate course is the minimum requirement. Students who will lead and manage Six Sigma projects are encouraged to complete the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate as a prerequisite. White Belt and Green Belt training from other educational providers is acceptable.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • List and describe the key deliverables of each phase of a LSS Healthcare DMAIC project

  • Explain the purpose of several key LSS tools and their application to healthcare situations

  • Demonstrate the application of those tools in examples of real-world, healthcare situations

Lesson 1: Introductions and Lean Six Sigma/DMAIC Review
  • Review principles of Lean Six Sigma
  • Review objectives of and deliverables for each major phase of a DMAIC improvement project


Lesson 2: Getting Started: Project Charter and SIPOC
  • Review components of a project charter
  • Create a draft project charter
  • Create a high level SIPOC


Lesson 3: Process Understanding: Process Stapling/Spaghetti Diagrams
  • Review importance of and steps in performing Process Stapling and developing Spaghetti Diagrams
  • Discuss the issues to consider in process stapling work environments
  • Build a Spaghetti Diagram


Lesson 4: Process Understanding: Value Stream Maps
  • Discuss the objectives and the costs/benefits of Value Stream Maps (VSM)
  • Learn the basic icons and symbols of, and the steps to create a VSM
  • Create a simple Value Stream Map


Lesson 5: Root Cause Analysis: Fishbone Diagrams/Affinity Diagrams/Key Drivers
  • Learn the objectives of and steps to create a Fishbone Diagram, Affinity Diagram and a Key Driver assessment
  • Create a Fishbone Diagram of the possible root causes of the problem
  • Using the Fishbone Diagram just created, develop an Affinity Diagram and follow-on Key Driver assessment


Lesson 6: Statistics and Graphs
  • Know the importance of properly using data to glean information about a process
  • Learn how to calculate or create and interpret
    • Measures of Center and Spread
    • Graphs of the Shape of the data
    • Pareto Diagrams
    • Scatter Diagrams


Lesson 7: Case Study and Open Discussion
  • Clarify key concepts and questions through open discussion
  • Apply lessons of the course to a case study scenario
