Managing Virtual Teams


One of the key challenges facing staff in current and future workplaces is working within and across virtual teams with members in different locations or work groups. This course will provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills to contribute to and lead effective, respectful and productive work environments regardless of where team members are physically located. This course will also provide individuals with an understanding of the competencies and capabilities needed to manage in a global, virtual, and matrixed organizational environment.

    After this class, students will be able to:
  • Describe the characteristics, benefits, and challenges related to remote teams
  • Assess the organizations and their own practices related to managing remote teams
  • Apply a variety of communication tools and management techniques to engage remote team members
  • Understand how to build and develop relationships with remote employees by establishing team charters and communication protocols, developing and maintaining trust and applying effective conflict resolution techniques
  • Balance the competencies required and decision making criteria in traditional management with those required to be effective in the matrix management role
  • Explore the effect of different behavioral styles on managing virtual employees
  • Establish and promote results oriented management and accountability
