Italian language courses.

Italian 101

Explore the Italian language and culture and learn to speak the way natives do. This introductory course is geared towards beginners with little to no experience in the Italian language. Students will learn how to make polite exchanges; ask and answer basic questions; briefly describe people and things; talk about hobbies and pastimes; tell time and discuss schedules, dates, prices, and the weather; and express likes and dislikes. The same textbook is used for Italian 101, 102 and 103 and the price includes the use of an online supersite for additional resource and practice. Textbook is not included in tuition. (*purchasing this book from another vendor will incur an additional cost of $25 for the use of the supersite)

After this class, you will be able to:
  • Use greetings and expressions of courtesy
  • Introduce himself or herself
  • Spell names and words using the Italian alphabet
  • Understand rules governing language gender and number (masculine/feminine; singular/plural) as well as those governing the use of definite and indefinite articles
  • Ask and answer questions about what or where something is
  • Say or ask how many items there are
  • Make statements using negation
  • Conjugate and actively use the verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to have’ as well as regular –are and –ere
  • Verbs in the present tense
  • Describe people and things using common and/or cognate adjectives

Italian 102

In this course students will continue to build on the foundation begun in Italian 101. Students will learn to describe people (including family members): what they are like, what they do, and what they are wearing. Discuss clothes shopping and technology. Talk about what you did recently. This course is geared towards those students who have taken Italian 101 in this program, or have had some exposure to Italian, or have a strong background in one or more romance languages. The same textbook is used for Italian 101, 102 and 103 and the price includes the use of an online supersite for additional resource and practice. Textbook is not included in tuition.   • Describe people in more depth (including clothing and professions)
  • Discuss technology and electronic forms of communicationl
  • Discuss clothes and shopping
  • Use possessive forms, prepositions, and demonstrative adjectives and pronouns
  • Distinguish between ‘conoscere’ and ‘sapere’ (two verbs which mean ‘to know’)
  • Ask a range of information questions
  • Conjugate and actively use a variety of regular and irregular verbs in the present tense
  • Describe some recent past actions (using transitive verbs)

Italian 105


This course is for advanced students who wish to continue to improve their knowledge of the Italian language. Students will learn how to use the impersonal form and relative pronouns, then delve into deeper levels of grammatical structure. They will increase fluency by studying how to get around in Italian cities and discussing everyday errands like banking. The class will also learn about Italian music, movies, books and the performing arts. The same textbook is used as in Italian 104, and the price includes the use of an online supersite for additional resources and practice. Textbook is not included in tuition.

Italian 103

Fine tune your Italian language skills and conversational style. This course is conducted mostly in Italian, so come prepared to speak. In this course you will learn to talk about shopping for food, preparing meals, and dining out. Additionally, you will be able to discuss daily routines and health-related issues. You will practice expressing yourself in the presente, passato prossimo, and imperfetto. For those who have taken Italian 101 and 102 in this program or have studied the equivalent of one semester of college-level Italian. The same textbook is used for Italian 101, 102 and 103 and the price includes the use of an online supersite for additional resource and practice. Textbook is not included in tuition.   • Order food and express needs and preferences in a restaurant setting
  • Talk about preparing a meal and setting the table
  • Speak about the recent past using transitive and intransitive verbs
  • Identify parts of the body and say what we do with them
  • Discuss daily routines and health-related matters using reflexive, reciprocal, and standard verbs in the present and present perfect
  • Describe past feelings, conditions, routines, and habits using the descriptive past (imperfetto) in combination with the present perfect (passato prossimo)
  • Recognize and use the pluperfect (trapassato prossimo)
  • Use direct and indirect object pronouns, adverbs, and expressions of quantity

Italian 104


By the time you sign up for Level IV, your comprehension skills are good. This course will help you to further develop confidence in your ability to speak the language and communicate with your friends. Classes are conducted in Italian, and you will have the opportunity to converse about a variety of subjects.
