This advanced CSS3 course — for existing CSS2.1 practitioners — will address the changes from the CSS2 standard to CSS3, including advanced features such as animations, transformations, shadows, Web font management and more. Our class projects will comprise advanced CSS3 demos including graphics-free rounded corners and speech bubbles; alpha transparency with RGBA; image-free gradients and drop shadows; scaling and multiple background images and embedding unique fonts. In addition, we’ll create multiple column layouts without floats or CSS positioning and see how to change layouts for small screens and mobile devices. We’ll also deal with browser compatibility issues.

HTML and CSS

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are inseparable languages that together describe the structure and display of pages on the World Wide Web! This class introduces you to the syntax and explores techniques using both languages to create and format headings, body text, hyperlinks, images, tables, forms and more. You’ll also learn to control the format and layout of elements on web pages using CSS stylesheets. Toward the end of the class you'll do several multi-column page layouts with an embedded video element. You can’t design professional websites without knowing these critical technologies.

HTML5

HTML5 allows Web designers the ability to create richer, more meaningful Web pages with structural tags and descriptive attributes. Although, it is still officially under development, HTML5 is is being used today to develop Web pages. At its core, HTML5 aims to improve the markup language with support for the latest multimedia (free of need for proprietary plugins and APIs) while keeping it easily readable by end-users and browsers. HTML5 is intended to absorb HTML4, XHTML1, DOM2HTML and JavaScript, so what you need to learn and how browsers handle HTML5 develops from, instead of replaces, previous technology. This class presents an overview of HTML5 and its development, including new syntactical features such as the '<'video'>', '<'audio'>', '<'header'>' and '<'canvas'>' elements, as well as how browsers parse and display HTML5 content. We’ll also learn about the HTML5 outline algorithm and how it can help you define and structure your site content. We’ll construct an HTML5 document with a header, content groups and formatting, footer and navigation, and illustrate how to take advantage of many of these improvements. And because HTML5 provides mobile device users richer Web applications and improved usability, we’ll discuss how this will improve apps development.
